West Sussex Advanced Motorcyclists was founded in 1999 and is a registered charity affiliated to IAM RoadSmart.
The club is run entirely by dedicated volunteers who love riding motorbikes. The Advanced Rider Course is provided by our highly skilled Observers who work with trainees one to one, gradually improving their skills through mentoring and coaching.
Our membership is small enough to be friendly but large enough to be effective. We come from a variety of riding backgrounds and interests, from long distance touring through off-roading to peg scraping. We are united by a common desire to promote road safety and be the best riders we can.
How to join
Go to www.iamroadsmart.org.uk, choose West Sussex Advanced Motorcyclists as your local group and purchase the Advanced Rider Course. We also offer free taster rides if you’d like to check that it’s for you.
For further information, or if you have already passed the IAM test, please Contact Us.
Where we meet.
Dialpost Village Hall, on the A24, RH13 8NJ, on the second Sunday morning of each month. Come along from 10.00; you will be very welcome.
The Advanced Rider Course
An Observer will be allocated to you according to your availability. They will accompany you over typically five or six rides of about three hours each, spaced to suit you. By then most people are test ready. You will receive a written report after each ride which includes a plan to help focus your own development. Another Observer will confirm your readiness before you apply for your test.
Like any new skills this takes practice and your Observer will expect you to ride between observed sessions.
The examiners are mostly ex-police motorcyclists who are all enthusiastic riders and will quickly put you at ease. The test is not compulsory of course, but it’s a proud moment when you pass and become a full member of the IAM.
The IAM RoadSmart Advanced Rider Course costs £175 which includes one year’s membership of the IAM and WSAM, your Rider Handbook, a copy of the Highway Code and the test.
We ask for a contribution of £60 towards your Observer’s running costs for 6 rides.
Subsequent IAM annual renewal currently costs £41. This doesn’t include WSAM membership which is £12 for full members and £25 for trainees.
After passing your test there are further opportunities, see Further Development.
We look forward to you joining our Group of Friendly Riders.
